Health classes explained
Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus and Standard — the meanings and how you transition among them.
Life insurance underwriting uses rate classes to price coverage. Terminology varies among carriers but follows the same structure: Preferred Plus (sometimes Super Preferred or Top Preferred), Preferred, Standard Plus and Standard, then additional ratings for higher-risk situations. Users of tobacco products sit in a separate tier with increased rates.
What underwriters look at
Build (your height-to-weight proportions), blood pressure and cholesterol readings, personal or family history of early cardiac or cancer events, traffic violation record, current medications, job activities and pursuits, and smoking or nicotine-containing product use. Top-tier classification needs clean marks across almost everything; Preferred allows minor variations; Standard Plus and Standard can accommodate managed conditions such as regulated high blood pressure.
How to use the quote tool
The health question requests honest self-assessment: Excellent aligns with Preferred Plus, Very good with Preferred, Good with Standard Plus, and Average with Standard. Your quotation reflects that classification; the carrier finalizes the actual class following underwriting. Uncertain? Quote using two different classes and compare; the actual application determines the final rate. Inflating your health status doesn't lower premiums; it simply makes the estimate less meaningful.
Susman Insurance Agency can help pinpoint carriers with friendlier guidelines for your specific situation, which often has more impact than the base price.
